Using a double fold bias binder to make bunting
Are you looking for a quick and easy way of sewing bunting? Look no further than your coverstitch machine and the bias binder attachment.
We have been blessed with two new babies in our family in the last two weeks so I stepped out of my comfort zone and appliqued their names to make buntings, then went back to my comfort zone to bind them!
Once you have the flags all ready to sew, set your coverstitch up with the double fold bias binder (attachments will vary depending on the brand and model you own, please check with your local sewing machine retailer for what is available for your model).
Cut the binding on the bias in the size specified for the binder you are using, join to form the length you need, plus a little extra (30cm) to allow for setting up. I like to use a spray starch on the binding and Mary Ellen's Best Press is my favourite as being a liquid it doesn't leave a residue on the fabric. Once starched and pressed, feed the binding through the binder and position on the machine, attach the binder to the machine. I like a single needle chain stitch for this however you could use a narrow coverstitch if preferred.
Begin stitching, check and adjust to ensure you are stitching in the correct position and adjust if necessary. Once the beginning piece is long enough to be able to tie, place the first flag into the binder. This will bind the top of the flag, continue placing flags one after another.
When the last flag has been stitched, continue to make enough tie for the other end of the bunting.
Once finished I tie the ends in a knot, if you prefer you can fold over and hand stitch or stitch with a sewing machine.
